THIS ever happened to you? - You see a perfect job on a website or newspaper ad.
You feel that your
resume is top-notch, listing all your relevant experience. After sending
your application in, you don't even get an
interview.
Often, the reason for this is that in your cover
letter, you have listed all of
your FEATURES but few of the BENEFITS your prospective employer will get if
they hire you.
A benefits statement tells the listener you understand what her problem
is, and that you will solve can do for her soon after she hires you. You
will lay out the benefits of you solving her problem, and show how your
solution is tangible. It will also show your enthusiasm for the task, and
should conclude with a call to action - generally "hire me, and I'll
start solving this problem on Monday morning!"
